Aircraft now turn smoothly on the ground
Other jets used to snap to a new heading at every corner of the taxi route. They now curve through each turn and ease their speed.
Other aircraft used to snap to a new heading at every corner of their taxi route. They now curve through each turn, ease their speed between points on the route, and line up for takeoff already pointing down the runway.
136° to 2.8°Arrivalslargest heading change in 0.1 s
90° to 1.2°Departureslargest heading change in 0.1 s
0Heading steps over 3°in a full cycle of traffic
What changed
- Each corner on the taxi route is now a rounded curve, and the heading follows the path a few metres ahead and behind.
- Speed eases between the timed points on the route, so jets no longer jump from one speed to another at a corner.
- Arrivals leave the runway on a straight leg first, so the turn off starts from the runway heading.
- Departures make a U-turn onto the runway and finish it pointing along the runway. They start the takeoff roll from that lineup point, 90 m down the runway.
What did not change
- Your own aircraft. This only affects the other traffic.
- The autopilot still lands in every weather preset, and flying with no input still ends in a crash.

Wider spacing between taxiing aircraft
Taxiing aircraft at Kai Tak now keep double the gap on the taxiways. Departures queuing at the runway end can still close up.

The checkerboard turn tightens at the end
Kai Tak's checkerboard turn now starts gently and tightens to about 25° of bank over Kowloon City before rolling out on the runway.
