Bank of China Tower and HSBC rebuilt

Central's two most famous towers now match the real buildings: the Bank of China's prisms and bracing, lit at night, and HSBC's masts and trusses.

Two of Central's landmarks have been rebuilt to match the real buildings: the Bank of China Tower and the HSBC Main Building.

What is new

  • Bank of China Tower (1990). The old model used the wrong shape. It is now a 52 m square cut along its diagonals into four triangular prisms that stop at floors 25, 38, 51 and 70, each with a sloping roof. White X-bracing crosses every face, there are columns at the four corners and the centre, and two 52 m masts stand on the tallest roof.
  • Bank of China at night. The bracing, columns and roof edges glow as lines of white-blue light, the way the tower is lit over the harbour. The glass shows lit floors, and the mast lights flash red.
  • HSBC Main Building (1985). It is now the steel coat-hanger structure: eight masts, each a cluster of four tubes, carry five levels of double-storey trusses with exposed X-bracing. The glass floors hang in three stepped sections (29, 35 and 44 storeys) over an open plaza, with the atrium wall on the harbour side, the sunscoop mirror on the south face, window-cleaning gantries on the roof and the two bronze lions at the door.
  • HSBC at night. The masts and trusses are floodlit and the atrium glows warm.

What is made up

  • The sizes, the floor counts and the positions of the trusses and braces are from period photos and general knowledge of the buildings, not survey drawings.
  • The night lighting is a simple glow on the steel and the atrium. It does not copy any real light show.
