Ocean Park, rebuilt from the maps

Both sites laid out as in 1998: the Lowland with its entry plaza and gardens, and the Headland with the tower, wheel, Dragon and Ocean Theatre, joined by the pod cable car.

Ocean Park has been rebuilt from park maps and photos, with both of its sites laid out as they stood in 1998: the Lowland by the road and the Headland on the ridge above Deep Water Bay, joined by the 1977 cable car.

The Headland

  • Ocean Park Tower: a tapered white shaft with a slowly revolving observation cabin and a red and white mast.
  • Ferris wheel and Abyss Turbo Drop: a white spoked wheel with turning gondolas beside twin lattice masts. A ring of seats climbs one mast, pauses and drops.
  • The Dragon: a looping steel coaster with a lift hill, a vertical loop, camelbacks and two turnarounds. A train runs on it.
  • Mine Train, Space Wheel, Flying Swing and Raging River: a low teal coaster on the western slope, a spinning-arm ride, a swinging chair ride and a winding blue channel.
  • Ocean Theatre: terraced seating cut into the slope under a long sloping canopy, with the show pool and its island, the stage and the lily-pad pools below.
  • Pacific Pier, the Shark Aquarium and Atoll Reef: a rock-edged sea lion lagoon with a white lighthouse, and two round white halls under shallow domes.
  • Marine World: blue-roofed halls, a plaza with a fountain, a restaurant, kiosks and footpaths between everything.

The Lowland

  • Car park and Entry Plaza: a car park with bays, cars and coaches beside the road, then a row of blue and white vaulted canopies over the ticket booths, under the park's sign.
  • Fountain plaza: a round fountain ringed by flower beds, with paths to every part of the park.
  • Lowland Gardens: a lawn with two ponds, a pavilion and a small stone bridge.
  • Kids' World: bright low halls, a carousel and a small wheel.
  • Middle Kingdom: a courtyard of red-pillared halls with green glazed roofs and a four-tier pagoda.
  • Bird Paradise: a netted aviary dome over rock and a waterfall.
  • Seal and dolphin pools: a round pool with tiered seating.

The cable car

The 1977 cable car now climbs from the Lowland station over Brick Hill to the Summit station on lattice pylons, on two ropes with a little sag. Thirty egg-shaped pods with coloured domes, glass bodies and yellow bases ride a continuous loop, up one rope and back down the other, and swing round at each station.

After dark

The tower cabin, the Ferris wheel, the stations, the lighthouse and the plazas are lit at night.

Ocean Park is about 7 km south-west of the Central waterfront, on the south side of Hong Kong Island. The park is a solid obstacle like any other, and the cable car pylons and ropes are too, so keep well above the tower and the Abyss masts.
